Joyce Grear is an accomplished
storyteller who has toured the United States
since 1987. A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, Grear is renowned
for
her "First Person Interpretations." She combines storytellingand
true historical
facts to captivate audiences throughdramatic interpretations of
outstanding
individuals in American History.
Many of Grear's performances
present African-American heroines. Their lives
inspire her to tell their story. She has performed, locally, nationally
and
internationally, as Phyllis Wheatley, Harriett Tubman, Mary McLeod
Bethune
and Minnie Evans. Her moving portrayals of Harriet "Moses"
Tubman have won
praise from students as well as teachers, and wide recognition from
her peers.
"Our students were spellbound
by Joyce Grear's performance. She took on the
persona so convincingly that I overheard 12 year old students arguing
about whether
she was in fact the real Harriet Tubman after the performance."--

Head of School, Friends School of Wilmington
